· ONE DAY EXCURSION: Calling at Battle, named after the most famous conflict on English soil, this compact market town grew up alongside the battleground, tranquil medieval abbey and surrounding ancient woodlands — largely unchanged to this day. Then to Great Dixter House & Gardens which was the family home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd. One of the pleasant features about the gardens is that they lie all around the house. Make a circuit of the gardens and you have made a circuit of the house exterior. Each has good views of the other. Great Dixter is made up of three houses, one built here in the mid-15th century with slightly later additions, the second a yeoman’s house from Benenden, across the border in Kent, built in the early 16th century and moved here in 1910, and the third combines the two with additional accommodation, completed in 1912. A guide is on hand in each room to explain the house’s history and answer questions (Entrance Included).
